Domenico Martire
(1634-17??)

Born in Perito (Pedace), on October 18, 1634 by Stefano Martire and Durante Beatrice Domenico Martire studied Moral philosophy and theology in the Monastery of Jesus of Cosenza.
On 12 March 1568, he was promoted to the priesthood of the Bishop Frantone in S. Marco Argentano (Cosenza) and on 28 March of that year, he celebrated his first Mass in the Church of SS. AA. Peter and Paul of Pedace, which, in 1669, was appointed pastor.

Men with high intelligence and strong humanitarian faith, Domenico Martire showed continuing thirst for Knowledge and culture, and for that reason, he often lived out of his town. specially in Naples and Rome, that were his favourite destinations for refining his theological studies in the monastery.

Very led for historical studies, also devoted himself to research the uses and customs of the Religious and civil world in Calabria and Pedace in particular. It is not certain the date of his death, which occurred after 1704, far from Pedace.

He wrote important bibliographies of distinguished men, "The audience" (La Platea) , and that great, valuable Treaty, Virtually an encyclopedic work, called "Sacred and Profana Calabria", which still today is a necessary reference point for anyone wishing to research and study the history of religious Calabria of the past.

Sacred and Profana Calabria (La Calabria Sacra e Profana)
In this treaty, Domenico Martire wrote too about the life of the Blessed Gioacchino Celico, and many others religious and lay people, included some of Gioacchino first followers.
The Opera has never been published until 1877-78, when the first Two volumes de Calabria Sacred and Profana, were published by Typography Migliaccio of Cosenza

About the manuscript
Kindly provided in our forum (Section Projects) * by Peppino Curcio

The text was written between 1677 and 1698 and is comprised of four large tomes (about 250 pages Each) written by hand.
The first two volumes that make the first volume are focused in the Sacred Calabria or issues about the lives of saints, churchmen and ecclesiastics things.

The third and the fourth should talk about places of Calabria, People, nature, Place names, etc..
Around 1900 a part of the Sacred and Profana Calabria was transcribed by the Provincial Deputation of Cosenza, but only the first and the second Volume. The rest remains to transcribe.

I sent three photos: First we will see a note written by the Biblioteque in Rome where they say that the threaty was kept in the library until 1933. Why We found there is unclear. Perhaps because the last years of his life Domenico Martire (he was A Franciscan friar Minimum order of) he lived in Rome (as the historical man Gustavo Valente says)

In the second photo's in the synthesis the life by Gioacchino Fiore. In previous pages Speaks with more depth. The third photo covers the news The church (St. grancia Martino of Jupiter), where the abbot Gioacchino died in March 1203.

The three pages are kept and have been consulted at the Archive State of Cosenza in Via Miceli.

* Many of us would like to see the entire recorded threaty by Domenico Martyr. If you think the same please visit the forum an join the discussion, in the "Progetti" section. Thank you
